Initially, Doyle aimed to surround the image of the criminal with a mystical halo, so the reader to the end remains in doubt even about the name of Moriarty.

In the “empty house” it is mentioned that his supposedly called James, but later the book “The Last Basis of Holmes” says that this is actually the name of his brother. In the new film adaptation of Sherlock, the character is called Jim. The appearance of the hero is described only in one story - "Valley of Horror." Moriarty is thin, tall and greatly looks like a priest because of a high-fierce speech and a soft, fatherly manner of behavior.

In his narrow face, framed by gray hair, there is nothing frightening. Not all directors subsequently adopted the literary characteristics of appearance - many considered that on the screen such an image would look boring. In the original series of stories of the deceased Sherlock, the author had to be resurrected, but he did not restore the Moriarty line, forcing Holmes to eliminate the remnants of his group.

He nevertheless found a second life in numerous sequels written by the imitators of Arthur Conan Doyle, but there the image of a criminal genius changed beyond recognition, up to the acquisition of paranormal abilities.
