Oscar Luts Biography
Book League Oscar Luts. And so I finally got to this collection. I understand that the percentage of those interested in this post will be incredibly small, but in defense of the post I want to note that now the writer is firmly forgotten and find any additional non-encyclopedic information about him and his work is almost impossible. So I leave my review for the same strange readers like me who, instead of swallowing bestseller, digs in dusty commissioners and remember the authors, whose time most likely has passed forever.
A brief certificate of the author and why I was interested in this collection. Oscar Luts was quite famous in Estonia, and now it is still considered the only Estonian author who managed to light up in world literature. He owes this glory to his story about the life of the Estonian provincial schoolchildren of the beginning of the age of the age under the name "Spring" here you can read about the film adaptation.
The story was very funny and had continued with the general name "The Stories about Toots", covering the subsequent periods of the life of the main characters. I also sincerely love this story and often re -read, the last time - at the beginning of the past summer. Nevertheless, Luts also wrote other novels, which is impossible to find on the Internet and even more so in stores.
For many years I have been looking for electronic texts of his works, even made a request to the libraries, where it seemed to be possible to write a book in the line for digitization. But unsuccessfully. As a result, I decided and ordered a book from the Bukinists - yes, the book of the year is still on sale. The popular "spring" and further "summer" and "autumn" are written in a traction-style with good humor, peasant philosophy, author's retreats and unpretentious plot sketches.
It seemed that the rest of the author’s prose would be sustained in the same author’s manner. But it turned out that other creations of Oscar Luts are somewhat different from his main cycle of household “Toots about Toots”, and the author can surprise an unprepared reader. I liked what I read, and I will make a brief review for each of the three stories. It was written in a year and dates back to the time when the author was a follower of the literature of romanticism - in any case, the Soviet literary critics assure.
The middle of the first quarter of the twentieth century. Estonia as part of the Russian Empire. In Europe, the First World War begins. A young artist returns from France to their native places. Here, on the lake, his sister with her husband lives. The artist gets acquainted with the locals and, among others, notes a girl from a dysfunctional family living in swamps on the other side of the lake.
Having shown interest in her, the artist finds out that he has an unenviable fate to be married to his father's drinking companion. Cares with a girl, the artist decides to take part in her fate. And accepts. Pretty terrible by the standards of romantic literature of the beginning of the century, of course. In addition, not everything is okay and in the family of the artist’s sister - there, as they say, “this is a turn.” All this amid the descriptions of the native Estonian swamps and the deaf province, where the train comes from the big world.
More recently, the young Estonian director Ergo Kuld shot a movie for this story a link to the trailer. Unfortunately, I searched all the dark corners of the Internet, but could not find where to see. And now they can’t go to Estonia today - they are not allowed. Therefore, who can - Pamagi !!!! Judging by the trailer, the film’s relationship is slightly changed in the film, but the picture is very beautiful.
In addition, I am already familiar with the director’s work: the film "Winter" - fan fiction on all the same Oscar Lutsu - I really liked it very much. In general, the story really surprised precisely as the creation of Luts, whose previously read works have always been kind, cheerful and sincere. And here - immediately in the swamp the story of the year.
A typical topic for Russian hopeless literature is the life of a small person. After the "Swamp" I prepared for the next tin, but the narrative was more calm. The story covers the life of the protagonist Andres Suvaleppe - from early childhood to the elderly. According to the tradition of the genre, he was orphaned early, and then his misadventures rushed. Given the biography of Oscar Luts, it is immediately noticeable that many details in the story are taken from the life of the author himself - he, like the main character, worked as a pharmacist.
And in general, sooner or later, on a chain of random events and as a result of the unconscious perseverance of a hero who does not lower his hand, luck begins to turn to Andres face, life is getting better, all hardships and efforts are not in vain. But the ending suddenly dumbfounds. No, there is no turning of the plot, not the piano in the bushes, but rather some kind of statement of senselessness.
It must be remembered that Estonia then, and now - these are two or three large cities and many small provincial settlements. The whole life of an Estonian peasant or artisan, or merchant is a vegetation among swamps; The echo of grandiose world events is not always come here. Therefore, even a little rising above the swamp, a simple Estonian can hardly hope for something grandiose in his fate.
And the environment, life, the environment itself tighten it back. A rather sad story. Soviet critics accepted it as a text, denouncing the class vices of capitalism, but, I think, Luts had in mind deeper plans regarding the story. I would say that the relevance of the story has not very much lost, although the times are different. This story is already years.
Estonian Republic before Soviet invaders came to it. The poor quarters of Tartu. Refuge of the bottom of the population, as well as impoverished Russian emigration. The main character - Tatyana Nikolaevna, the widow of a Russian court official - rents an apartment in slums with two children. All her income is random sewing work, as well as the rent from the rental of the room with two bugi workers from the factory.
Around poverty, alcohol, debauchery and fraud. Tatyana Nikolaevna is trying to rape the former Russian officer Belsky, and when he does not succeed, he begins to spread dirty rumors about the woman and even sends "customers" to her. Knowing about her past work by a nurse-volunteer, local women are going to an abortion, the police are looking for stolen things from her, and the hostess of the apartment requires at night to guard the garden instead of interest for non-payment of debts for housing.
An interesting moment that in the work of Luts also brought the image of a strong active woman, not in the main character, but in one of the characters - the wife of a neighbor -recipher, also a Russian woman who was not going to put up with problems, but preferred to solve them harshly and boldly. By the way, Oscar Luts himself guesses in the reporter - it is clear that he did not compose the story, but wrote from nature.
Suddenly, according to the work in the USSR, the film of the year of the year of the year was shot. It will be necessary to see. Gorky or Kuprin. I think that after a while I will re -read and rethink the readings read. There is also an idea to scan the book and put it on the network not from pirate reasons, but to preserve the writer's heritage, who, by the way, was perfectly treated by Russia and condemned Bourgeois.
But I don’t know how legitimate to do so, in short, I’ll think about it. Thanks to those who got to the end of the post. If suddenly, among the venerable audience, acquaintances with stories are, light up - it is always nice that someone reads the same as you. NB: For those who are interested in the now unpopular Estonian literature, I recall their post-review of the collection of stories of Estonian writers.
